Where Does Vista Store Drivers?

Drivers are the foundation of your computer and allow Windows to communicate with your hardware. Microsoft Windows Vista stores drivers for hardware peripherals in a driver store, located within the Windows installation directory--usually "C:\Windows\System32\".

  1. Searching for Drivers

    • When you insert a new hardware device into your computer, Windows Vista attempts to match your device with pre-existing drivers. If drivers are not found in your driver store, the system will search Windows Update. If no drivers are found, you will be prompted to provide the CD/DVD that came with your device.

    Driver Signing

    • In order for Windows Vista to install a device driver, it must be signed by the manufacturer. The driver-signing process ensures that the peripheral is compatible with Windows Vista. Unsigned drivers pose a risk to your system and may make Windows Vista unstable.

    Function

    • Without drivers, your computer is unable to perform basic tasks. Each component inside and outside your system requires drivers. For example, in order to access the Internet, you must have the right network drivers.

    Types

    • Drivers typically fall into two groups: specific and generic. Microsoft and other companies have generic drivers that work with a wide array of devices. Specific drivers are device-dependent and increase performance.

    Warning

    • It is not advisable to access or modify the Windows Vista driver store. If you need to update your drivers, do so through the Device Manager.
