Why Did Cowboys Wear Chaps?

The attire of a cowboy is designed for the rough and tumble outdoor lifestyle they live. The wide-brim cowboy hat protects their neck and face from the sun; heeled cowboy boots help keep their feet in the stirrups; and chaps help to protect a cowboy's legs. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. History

    • The original chaps, called armas, were invented by the Spanish who settled in Mexico to protect their legs from cactus and other brush. They were large slabs of cowhide attached to the saddle and wrapped around the legs.

    Significance

    • Chaps are intended to protect the legs of cowboys working with cattle, horses and other livestock; they help protect the legs from brush, reduce the chance of rope burns and reduce dust on clothing.

    Types

    • There are five types of chaps: shotgun chaps, bat wings, woolly chaps, chinks and armitas. Chinks are most commonly in use in the Southwest today.

    Features

    • Chaps are typically made from cowhide and are worn over trousers with an integrated belt and metal buckles.

    Benefits

    • Chaps can be cut to protect against wind, snow and cold or to provide more air circulation in hot weather.
