Types of German Foods

German cuisine is often considered to revolve around sausages, meats, dumplings and beer, especially by people who have never been to Germany. However, the food served there is actually much healthier and more diverse than many people's perception of it.

Bratwurst

Bratwurst is one of the more popularly known German sausages. It is made of pork and veal and seasoned with ginger, nutmeg and coriander.

Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut is commonly served along with sausage or other meats, or in stews throughout Germany. It is a sour cabbage dish that is high in vitamin C and can taste rather acidic.

Schnitzel

Schnitzel is another popular German food. It is a thinly pounded cutlet of beef, pork, or chicken that is breaded and fried and often topped with peppers and mushrooms.

Vegetable Stew

Vegetable stews are eaten very often either as side dishes or main dishes. They are often prepared with carrots, spinach, peas, beans and turnips.

Bread

Bread is extremely important in German food culture, eaten for snacks and breakfast, though rarely as side dishes to main courses. Rye, wheat, onion, and sunflower bread are some of the types seen throughout the country.
