Why Are Dogs' Noses Wet & Cold?

Many, but not all breeds of dogs have noses that are naturally moist and cold. Understanding why a dog's nose is wet and cold will help you understand what role this plays in dog health.

    Effects

  1. Dogs use their nose in the natural cooling-down process, as moisture on their nose will keep them cooler, especially on hot days; licking their nose consistently keeps them cooled down.
  2. Considerations

  3. Dogs tend to have cold and wet noses as part of the cool-down equation---keeping their noses moist and cool will keep the rest of them moist and cool as well.
  4. Misconceptions

  5. It has been believed that a wet and cold nose is necessary for dog health, but this is not the case---some dogs have dry and cracked noses, but are still perfectly healthy.
  6. Features

  7. Not every dog will have a moist or cool nose, as some breeds of dogs have naturally dry and even cracked noses.
  8. Warning

  9. A dry or cracked nose is not always a sign of illness; a wet nose is not always a sign of health, but a warm nose may be a sign of fever in a dog and should be checked by a vet.
