Types of Breathing in Yoga

Breathing is the most vital activity for all living organisms. Breathing exercises or pranayama (prana means life, ayama means control) are the very basis of yoga. According to the ancient principles of yoga, a person who can control his breath can control his life. Yogic breathing essentially consists of three types: inhalation, exhalation and retention of breath.

  1. Dirga Pranayama

    • Also known as the three-part breath, this breathing exercise is generally for beginners. It basically teaches you how to completely fill your lungs and then empty them.

    Samavritti Pranayama

    • This exercise, also known as equal breathing, helps in developing focus and concentration while helping your body relax.

    Nadi Sodhana

    • Also called alternate nostril breathing, this exercise helps in balancing the chakras and both sides of the body.

    Shitali Pranayama

    • This simple exercise is also called the cooling breath and helps the body cool down after a yoga workout.

    Ujjayi

    • Called the Ocean breath, this exercise helps enhance your focus and energy levels.
