About the Segway Human Transporter

The Segway Human Transporter is a self-balancing, two-wheeled electric vehicle invented by Dean Kamen. The television program "Good Morning America" hosted the unveiling of this product in 2001. History

The Human Transporter was the first product created by the Segway company. The prototype of the Transporter was code-named "Ginger," and used "motors taken from computer printers," according to MSU.edu.

Technology

Electricity, software, tilt sensors and gyroscopes power and balance the Transporter. Servo drive motors move the wheels forwards or backwards.

Using the Transporter

Transporter users stand on a platform between the two wheels and hold on to handle bars, leaning forwards or backwards to control movement.

Personal Use

The Segway Human Transporter can "take you places that a car or bicycle can't," according to Segway.com. People can use the Transporter in office buildings, airports, businesses and even on outdoor sight-seeing tours.

Organizational Use

Segway states that police departments, security firms and emergency response teams use the Transporter. The Segway "i2" and "x2" models were designed with "direct input from law enforcement and security professionals."
