Because of war, the airline was forced to discontinue most international service in 1939 and stopped all flights in 1945. As a new company, Deutsche Lufthansa Aktiengesellschaft returned to the skies on April 1, 1955.

    Jet Service

    • With the arrival of Boeing 707 aircraft, Lufthansa introduced jet service in 1960. The airline expanded jet service through the 1960s with 727s and 737s. The Boeing 747 jumbo jet made its Lufthansa debut in 1970.

    Back to Berlin

    • After German reunification in 1990, the airline returned to Berlin for the first time since World War II.

    Alliance

    • In May 1997, Lufthansa, along with Air Canada, SAS, Thai Airways and United Airlines, created the Star Alliance, the first such agreement in the aviation industry. Today, Star Alliance members operate more than 17,000 daily flights to more than 900 destinations around the world.
