Disney's Epcot Center History
EPCOT center (now called simply Epcot) is the second park to be added to Walt Disney World after the original Magic Kingdom. It represents the culmination of a dream by Walt Disney himself, one that finally came to fruition when it opened.
-
Concept
-
Disney envisioned EPCOT as an "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow," a working community that would exist as a genuine utopia.
Construction
-
The Disney company revisited Walt's idea in the late 1970s, tweaking it so that it more closely resembled a World's Fair.
-
Opening
-
EPCOT Center opened in 1982, after a construction period of 3 years. It was divided into two sections: Future World and World Showcase.
Name Changes
-
EPCOT Center went through some name changes in the mid-90s, first to Epcot '94, then Epcot '95, then finally to just Epcot.
Festivals
-
At the same time Epcot changed its name, it inaugurated a pair of festivals--an International Flower and Garden Festival and an International Food and Wine Festival--that have run there ever since.
