Morgan State University Information
Morgan State University is an African-American college located in Baltimore, Md. The school boasts one of the highest application rates amongst African-American high school students in the country, according to its website.

History

In 1867, the university was founded as Centenary Biblical Institute by the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It extended its offerings and subsequently became a public university in 1939, and was renamed Morgan State University in 1975.

Morgan State University reported having nearly 6,000 students and a student-to-staff ratio of 18:1 in 2009. The full-time cost for Maryland residents was $3,219 and for nonresidents was $7,464 for the 2008-09 school year.

Morgan State University consists of schools for liberal arts, education, engineering, business, urban studies, computers, mathematics, natural sciences, and public health and policy. The university is home to the Estuarine Research Center, an institute dedicated to studying Chesapeake Bay ecosystems.

Morgan State University offers 40 bachelor's degrees, 26 master's degrees, and 13 doctoral programs throughout its schools and colleges. It also offers pre-college programs designed to help African Americans prepare for higher education, such as the Academic Champions of Excellence and Project PRIME.

Morgan Stanley's football team is a Division I-AA school, while the university's other sports--including men's and women's basketball and track and field--compete at the NCAA level. The university offers two- and four-year Army ROTC programs, a multitude of student organizations and 20 Greek organizations.
