History of Snaffle Bit

The snaffle bit is a direct pressure bit. It applies pressure to the bars, tongue and sometimes the roof of the horse's mouth. Most have a jointed mouthpiece, but any bit that works by applying pressure is considered a snaffle.

  1. 1400 B.C.

    • A jointed metal snaffle was used in southeastern Europe and the Mediterranean.

    Sixth Century

    • The snaffle bit was depicted in sixth century Persian sculptures.

    Eighteenth Century

    • Battista Giovanni Pignatelli began using the snaffle bit to start young horses at the riding academy in Naples. The Campagne School used the snaffle bit to train cavalry recruits. As they became better riders, the double bridle--consisting of a snaffle and curb bit--was introduced.

    Fun Fact

    • Around 300 B.C., the Celts of Gaul introduced the leverage (or curb) bit.

    Today

    • The snaffle bit continues to be popular with expert horsemen in events like the National Finals Rodeo and Snaffle Bit Futurity.
