Seconal Side Effects

Seconal is the brand name for the drug secobarbital, prescribed in the short-term treatment of insomnia and to calm people before surgery. Seconal is in the category of medications called barbiturates. Numerous side effects from its use are possible.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • Common side effects associated with Seconal include drowsiness the day after taking the drug, nightmares, dizziness, headaches, indigestion, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea or constipation.

    Additional Side Effects

    • Seconal also can cause confusion, memory problems, nervousness, restlessness and trouble concentrating.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Serious side effects are uncommon and should be addressed by a doctor. These include hallucinations, slow heartbeat, slow breathing, faintness, fever, sore throat, mouth sores, abnormal bruising or bleeding, and swelling of the feet, ankles, legs or hands.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Some people have an allergic reaction to Seconal. Symptoms include hives or rash, itching, facial or mouth swelling, difficulty breathing, hoarseness and throat closing.

    Drug Interactions

    • Seconal can interact with many other medications. These include alcohol, anticoagulants, antihistamines, antidepressants, antipsychotics, doxycycline, female hormones, muscle relaxants, narcotic medications and steroids, among others.

    Withdrawal

    • Anyone who takes Seconal for two weeks or longer should not stop using the medication suddenly, or withdrawal symptoms can occur. These symptoms include anxiety, muscle twitching, tremors, weakness, vision changes, nausea or vomiting and insomnia. Sudden withdrawal from long-term use can result in seizure.
