Cool Information on the Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is the largest man-made structure on Earth. It was originally constructed from earth, rocks and sticks by seven emerging states, known as "the Seven Powers," in an attempt to protect themselves from attack. As other rulers came into power and conquered "the Seven Powers," (and eventually each other), the wall was added upon and eventually joined into one giant wall.

  1. Size

    • Archaeologists are constantly discovering that the Great Wall is larger than previously thought. In 2009, it is believed to be over 5,500 miles long, or over 8,800 kilometers.

    Time Frame

    • The Great Wall was constructed between 5 B.C. and 1400 A.D.

    Geography

    • The Great Wall of China reaches from Shanhaiguan in the east to Lop Nur in the west, and borders inner Mongolia to the North.

    Misconceptions

    • It is often stated that the Great Wall of China can be seen from the moon. Astronauts who have been to the moon have said that isn't accurate. However, they have said it can be seen from Earth's orbit.

    Conservation

    • Because of its age and composition, the Great Wall is quickly deteriorating. Conservation and revitalization efforts are active and constant.
