The highland terrier is officially called the west highland white terrier by the American Kennel Club. Highland terriers are a non-shedding, lively, small and intelligent dogs that are popular pets and companions.

    History

  1. The American Kennel Club has recognized the highland terrier as part of the terrier group since 1908. Originally, highland terriers came from Scotland where they were bred to control vermin and hunt.
  2. Temperament

  3. Highland terriers are an intelligent, alert, friendly, feisty, clever, active and determined breed of dogs. They get along with most all people, and are prone to barking.
  4. Size

  5. Highland terriers weigh from 13 to 20 lbs. and stand nine to 11 inches at the withers, or the highest point on the back. Their tales usually range between five to six inches.
  6. Identification

  7. Highland terriers have two-inch soft white coats, small and pointy ears, muscular bodies and short jaws.
  8. Life Expectancy

  9. Highland terriers live for approximately 15 years.
  10. Fun Fact

  11. It is said that highland terriers were bred for their white coat so that they could be easily distinguished from foxes during hunts.
