Cognac History

Cognac gets its unique flavors from blending and aging (in oak barrels). The four major companies -- Hennessy, Martell, Remy Martin and Courvoisier -- control 80 percent of the cognac made in the world, and they produce it all in the same region of southwest France where it was first invented.

Wine First

In the 13th century, local wines lead to an expansion of vineyards in the Charente region, home of the city of Cognac.

Brandy

The quality of wine in Cognac drops and distilleries created "brandwijn" (burnt wine). Brandy is invented.

Eau-du-vie

Through double distillation, eau-de-vie--a drink that is easier to ship without damage than wine is--is created.

Early Cognac

Beginning in the 18th century, it is discovered that blending the various eau-de-vie can make a unique beverage.

Region

The areas of Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Bois were recognized in 1938 as the official growing region of cognac because of the nature of the climate and soil.
