- An indoor base tan should be built over a course of eight weeks. This allows you to tan without too much exposure and gradually tan skin. Tan no more than three days a week, with the first session lasting no more than 5 minutes.
- Tanning beds using newer technology have stronger lamps and should never be used for more than 20 minutes per session. Overexposure to tanning lamps can cause sunburn and increase risks of skin cancer.
- Indoor tanning can be done year round, but it is not recommended to tan that much. Tan only before summer season to build a base tan.
- Overexposing your skin to indoor tanning beds can cause sunburn and skin damage, accelerate skin aging and increase risks of skin cancer.
- Indoor tanning can also be done in a form of a spray or airbrush tan. Spray tans can be done at home with a canned spray product or by visiting a professional spray tan salon. These alternatives are healthier as skin is not exposed to UV rays and no harmful chemicals are used.
- Indoor tanning with a spray tan can be done often and year round. An applied spray tan lasts about a week and can be reapplied as desired.
