Tea Party Ideas for Kids

A kid's tea party can be anything from a costume party to an etiquette lesson, but the best fit is somewhere in between. Let the mood of your tea party reflect the level of decorum that your kids can handle--and don't forget the cookies. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Basics

    • Select your tea. There are many decaffeinated teas available, as well as specialized teas just for children.

    Accessories

    • Encourage the children to dress up and to bring their own guests to the party, i.e., stuffed animals and dolls. Use a toy tea set and allow the kids to serve their guests themselves.

    Timing

    • Keep it short. It is best to have the tea prepared and slightly cooled before the party begins.

    Benefits

    • By introducing a little elegance into your kids' lives, you can give them a measure of comfort and familiarity with more formal occasions. Tea parties for kids are also a lovely activity to fill an otherwise dull afternoon.

    Variations

    • If some kids absolutely do not like tea, you can fill their cups with plain milk, soy milk, or even (gasp) juice. You can pour the alternate beverages into a spare creamer or another tea pot. Once everything is poured into a tea cup, it all looks the same and you still have the feeling of a tea party.

    Snacks

    • Choose snacks that are appropriate for kids while still being a little fancy. Cut the crusts off of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or serve gourmet cookies with chocolate or fruit fillings.
