What Is Dimethicone in Makeup?

Dimethicone, scientifically known as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), is an organic compound belonging to the silicone family. Dimethicone is commonly used in skin care, medications, and makeup, and is safe for topical use. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Makeup Products With Dimethicone

    • Dimethicone is a silicone polymer that is used in all types of makeup and skin care products, such as lotions and creams, shampoo, cream-based eyeshadow and blush products, and lipstick.

    Identification

    • Dimethicone is clear in color and feels smooth and silky to the touch. Usually gel-like in consistency, it feels like a finely milled powder when rubbed into the skin.

    Function

    • Dimethicone is used in makeup for many reasons, including conditioning the skin and hair, lubrication, protection of the skin, and to aid in the prevention of foaming. It is also responsible for the slippery texture of some makeup products.

    Side Effects

    • Like most emollient makeup ingredients, Dimethicone has very few side effects. However, a small population may experience a mild rash, stinging, or a tingling sensation that will go away with discontinued use of the product.

    Warnings

    • Some preservatives in makeup with dimethicone can cause the skin to be more susceptible to sunburn or cause further irritation to acne-prone skin. Using makeup with dimethicone that is labeled "non-comedogenic" reduces the likelihood that irritation will occur.
