Gift Ideas Using Canning Jars
Keep a case of canning jars (pint, quart or half-gallon size) in storage for gift containers. They can be easily decorated for any season, holiday or celebration. As with any gift, first think of the recipient to decide the contents for the jar, as well as the decorative aspects of the jar. The lid and screw-top on canning jars are usually a gold or silver tone. All you need is a bottle of spray paint to change their color. Just make sure that the paint has dried and hardened (at least overnight) before handling them and placing them on the jar. Cut a circle of bright cotton fabric with a pinking shears and place it over the top of the flat lid of the jar, before putting on the screw top.

Dessert Mix
-
Choose your favorite recipe and print it out on a colorful piece of card stock, cut to 3-by-5 inches. Layer all of the dry ingredients for the recipe. Use a piece of ribbon or raffia to attach the recipe card around the lid.
Sports Lovers
-
Layer golf balls, tees and other golf accessories into a canning jar. Use cotton fabric with a golf theme for the lid cover. Attach a gift certificate for a round of golf, with some twine, to the lid. Use this idea for the fishing nut in your group as well. Fill the jar with lures, spinners, weights, hooks and those cute rubber worms and bugs.

Budding Artist
-
Pack a canning jar with paintbrushes, colored pencils, acrylic paints and other painting accessories for the budding artist. Attach a gift certificate for an art class from the local arts and crafts store. Use a bright and colorful fabric for the lid.
Cookie Monster
-
Make a batch of cookies or candy and fill a quart canning jar with them. If you are really ambitious, you can purchase a half-gallon canning jar for this purpose. This is the best gift when you don't know what to give someone or the recipient is someone you don't know well. Attach a certificate for a free latte at a nearby coffee drive-through.
Friendship Soup
-
Pour the beans and lentils for a Friendship Bean Soup into a canning jar. This is perfect for a winter or fall gift and so colorful too. Attach the recipe for the soup (see Resources). Any recipe, especially the Friendship Bean Soup, in a jar is a great gift for a new neighbor, a new coworker or for someone you would like to be a new friend.
