According to the National Reading Panel (NRP), a group formed by Congress in 1997, "Reading comprehension is very important to the development of children's reading skills and therefore to their ability to obtain an education."
Process

The NRP concluded that vocabulary plays a key role in reading comprehension. In order for students to be successful with reading comprehension they must be taught vocabulary both directly and indirectly.

The NRP writes, "When students are able to use [comprehension methods] successfully, they perform better in recall, answering questions, generating questions, and summarizing texts."
Problems

There are a series of problems that hinder children's reading comprehension: 1. Language problem, 2. Not comfortable enough yet with the language, 3. Word recognition problem.
Teaching and Expanding

To increase reading comprehension skills, children should be exposed to a variety of reading material. Children can practice reading and comprehending everyday items around them.

Good article and this has been purported since day one and as teachers we need to find the time in our daily interaction with our children to encourage and properly teach reading and comprehension skills. We must make reading FUUUUUUNNNN! ESPECIALLY FOR OUR BOYS! It's a lot of work but its worth it in the end.
