- According to Lisa Pierson, DVM, illness should be considered if your cat stops using the litter box. Bladder stones, diabetes and cystitis are all suspects.
- If the litter box is dirty, your cat may not want to use it. Scoop it every day. Some cats prefer a separate box for urinating and one for defecating.
- Do not place the litter box in a high traffic area. Cats like privacy and safety when they're in the vulnerable state of elimination.
- Switching litters can cause some cats to rebel. Scent, texture and/or color can all affect them negatively. When you find a litter the cat likes, stick with it. Choose low dust, unscented scooping litter for best results.
- Stress can cause a variety of reactions in your cat, including spraying. Introduce new pets slowly and provide a separate litter box for new cats.
