Duties & Responsibilities of Room Attendants

Sometimes referred to as chambermaids or housekeepers, room attendants are responsible for the cleanliness of rooms in hotels, motels and resorts. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that the demand for workers in this field will increase by 15.8 percent through 2016.

Daily Cleaning

Each day, room attendants visit guest rooms to make beds, run the vacuum, empty the trash, and exchange used towels and linens for clean ones

Preparation

After a guest checks out, room attendants are responsible for preparing the room for the next guest. This involves vacuuming floors and curtains, changing bed linen, dusting surfaces, cleaning mirrors and bathroom fixtures, and washing windows.

Replenishing

Room attendants replenish toiletries, tissue, toilet paper, coffee, tea and any other complimentary items. They also take inventory of the minibar to bill guests for anything consumed and restock anything that was taken out.

Room Inventory

Room attendants ensure that all appliances and electronics, such as coffee pots, hair dryers, televisions, and heating and cooling elements, are functional. They also take inventory of such items in the room, reporting anything that is missing or damaged.

Customer Service

Room attendants provide customer service, such as turning down beds, delivering newspapers and picking up dry cleaning or ironing. They also fulfill requests for extra pillows or towels.
