Dematting Dog Grooming Information

Dematting a dog is a simple process given the proper tools. A wire slicker brush, mat splitter, metal comb and electric clippers are the tools a groomer uses to remove mats from a dog's coat.

  1. Clippers

    • Electric clippers are used to remove tight mats that are close to the dog's skin.

    Mat Splitter

    • A mat splitter is an L-shaped tool with a sharp blade. It is used to break up mats prior to brushing and combing. This tool helps to blend sparse areas of fur left over after the mats have been removed.

    Slicker Brush

    • A slicker brush contains hooked wire bristles and can be flat or curved.

    Metal Comb

    • Once the mat has been split with the mat splitter, and loosened with the slicker brush, a metal grooming comb is used to comb the mat completely out of the fur.

    Expert Insight

    • Mat removal should be done on dry fur prior to bathing. Wet mats are extremely difficult to remove by brushing and they will retain moisture and bacteria which can cause skin irritations.
