Pain Relief Options During Childbirth
There are a number of pain relief options a woman can choose from when she is in labor to ease the pain of childbirth.
-
Systemic Medication
-
According to Dr. Bhavani-Shankar Kodali, a woman receives systemic medication via an IV or a shot into a muscle. Systemic medication can cross the placenta and make a baby sleepy after birth.
Regional Anesthesia
-
Regional anesthesia, an epidural, is given by injecting anesthesia near the lower spine while a woman is in labor. Regional anesthesia has no effect on the baby during childbirth.
-
Warm Water Immersion
-
Immersing a woman in warm water that is near body temperature for an hour can decrease labor pain. A woman in childbirth should not be in the water longer than an hour and a half, as this may cause problems by increasing the baby's body temperature.
Maternal Massage
-
Touching and massaging a woman during childbirth can provide some pain relief, as massage helps a woman relax during labor and reduces anxiety. Applying pressure to the lower back can provide relief of pain related to the positioning of the baby's head.
Movement and Positioning
-
Movement such as walking or bouncing on a birthing ball can ease the pain of labor contractions. Different positions at different points during labor can also be helpful.
