Microsoft Office is a well-known suite of office productivity applications. Unfortunately, the high cost of this collection puts it out of the reach of many businesses and consumers. In 2002, Sun Microsystems released a competing product, Open Office, that was not only free but had an open source that could be accessed by anyone. Calc is part of that product.

  1. Description

    • Calc is an electronic spreadsheet program that manages numbers through cells arranged in rows and columns. It can open and save to Excel (XLS) files.

    Formatting

    • You can control the appearance of the spreadsheet by specifying fonts, colors, border styles and templates.

    Formulas

    • Natural language formulas allow you to create equations using words (sales minus cost) rather than esoteric cell references.

    Sum

    • An "Intelligent Sum Button" automatically totals groups of numbers based on context.

    Wizards

    • Built-in wizards make it easy to use advanced features and functions by answering questions off multi-step dialogues.

    Charts

    • Nine charts, including bar, pie, line and area, let you display data in a more visual two- or three-dimensional form.
