The Effects of Tylenol 3

Tylenol 3 is prescription analgesic to treat mild to moderate pain. The active component of Tylenol 3 is codeine, but it also contains acetaminophen. The codeine relieves pain while the acetaminophen reduces fever. Because Tylenol 3 is a scheduled narcotic, it is only available through the prescription of a doctor.

  1. Addiction

    • Codeine is an opiate that is processed by the liver, converted to morphine and attaches to pain receptors in the brain. The body builds a tolerance, and the patient needs more codeine to relieve pain, leading to addiction and increased amounts for pain relief.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects of Tylenol 3 include dizziness, fatigue and breathing problems.

    Allergies

    • Some patients are allergic to codeine. These patients may have trouble breathing and may go into anaphylactic shock. Before taking codeine, consult with your doctor and let him know if you have any allergies from products like dyes, preservativs or meat. These may be signs of possible drug allergies.

    Alcohol

    • Alcohol exacerbates the tiredness and breathing problems from Tylenol 3. Do not drink alcohol while using codeine products like Tylenol 3.

    Liver Problems

    • The acetaminophen in Tylenol 3 pills damages the liver. Do not take more Tylenol 3's than recommended by a doctor, and do not take acetaminophen for longer than prescribed.
