White sage is a drought-tolerant perennial herb that is native to the Southwestern United States. It is also called bee sage since the white flowers are very attractive to bees. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Botanical and Common Names

    • The botanical name for white sage is Salvia apiana. It is commonly known as white sage or bee sage.

    Garden Hardiness Zones

    • White sage is best grown in Zones 7 to 11.

    Size

    • White sage will slowly grow to a full size of 2 to 3 feet tall and up to 8 feet wide. The flower spikes will extend 2 to 5 feet above the body of the white sage plant.

    Sun and Water Needs

    • White sage should be grown in full sun. It is drought tolerant and will not do well in wet conditions in the winter. In the summer, it can be watered as much as needed in dry locations.

    Flowers

    • The tiny white and lavender flowers will appear from April until June, attracting many bees to the garden.

    Usage

    • White sage leaves are mainly used as incense. It can also be used medicinally to treat colds, the eyes, and as a blood tonic.
