Computer Network Technician Job Duties

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the need for computer network technicians will increase by 27 percent through 2016, resulting in the creation of 83,000 new jobs. Each day, computer network technicians perform a variety of duties.

  1. Background

    • The work of computer network technicians revolves around the computer network of a company. A computer network is the system of computers and printers that a company uses as well as its data lines for Internet usage and its servers.

    Planning

    • Network technicians plan computer systems for their companies, which involves examining the funds available for the systems and the functions the systems will perform. From there, the technicians specify the right types of wiring and hardware for the system.

    Network Configuration

    • Network technicians develop the configuration for the network, once it is planned, by selecting what types of network address each piece of hardware will have. They also compile databases or searchable lists of information that details the location and types of network hardware.

    Implementation

    • After all plans and configuration are complete, network technicians implement the plans by installing the hardware and its components.

    Troubleshooting

    • Once the network is in place, technicians troubleshoot and solve any problems that arise, such as a loss of Internet activity or technical hardware crashes. They also install updates as needed.
