Types of Tubal Ligation

Tubal ligation is a surgical procedure that is performed as a means of permanent female sterilization. Tubal ligation prevents future pregnancies by preventing the sperm from traveling through the fallopian tubes and by preventing the egg from traveling to the uterus. This procedure is 98 to 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy.

  1. Abdominal Larascopic Tubal Ligation

    • Larascopic tubal ligation is the most common method used when performing a tubal ligation. This procedure is performed by making two or three small incisions in the abdominal area in order to allow medical instruments access to the fallopian tubes. The tubes are cauterized and either sealed shut or closed with a plastic clip or ring.

Tubal Ligation Following a Vaginal Birth

    • A tubal ligation can also be performed right after a vaginal childbirth using only one small incision near the naval or through an incision inside the vagina.

Tubal Ligation Following a Cesarean Birth

    • Women who are having a cesarean birth can elect to have a tubal ligation done before the doctor closes up the C-section incision.

    Tubal Ligation Reversal

    • Sometimes a woman may decide at a later date that she wants another child and elect to have a tubal reversal. Tubal reversals are very difficult and have a low rate of success.

    Tubal Ligation Risks

    • If a pregnancy does occur after the procedure, it may be an ectopic pregnancy, which requires surgical intervention and can be life-threatening.
