Substitute Teacher Job Descriptions
A substitute teacher is responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and promoting student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher.

Essential Functions

Substitute teachers must implement teacher lesson plans, assign student class work and homework, maintain classroom control and discipline. Substitute teachers must also complete a daily report or evaluation to communicate any pertinent information resulting from the day's events.
Types

There are two types of substitute teaching jobs; permanent or long-term substitutes and day substitutes. Permanent substitutes work in schools for longer then a few days at a time. They are often hired when the regular teacher is out on extended leave. Day substitutes work as needed when teachers are out of the classroom for a few days due to sickness or vacation.

Qualifications to be a substitute teacher vary by state. Most states require a teaching certificate or substitute teaching certificate. The requirements for these certificates also vary by state. Some states require only a high school diploma while others require a bachelor's degree.
Physical Requirements

Substitute teachers need to stand for the majority of the day and may also sit for long periods and be required to reach or lift more than 25 pounds.
