Dresses for the wedding should fit the venue.

Weddings are huge events for the bride and the groom, but there are other members of the family who are just as into the details as the bride! The mother of the bride, sometimes called the MOB, can be just as concerned about her appearance as the bride, and finding the right outfit and accessories can be very time-consuming, because the choices are so numerous. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Beach Wedding--Formal

    • For the mother of a bride at a formal beach wedding, the options are quite numerous, but it could take some time to really find the right dress. Look for a dress or suit that is lightweight, maybe even cocktail length, to help balance the sun and heat of the beach. Sandals are the best footwear, because they will allow for more air movement while on the beach. If you cannot find an outfit that you feel is quite formal enough that is also light, try to dress it up with accessories. Find a simple necklace that features floating beads or crystals and matching earrings, for instance. Another thing to keep in mind is your hair. Try to do an updo that will not get ruined by the sun and water of the beach air.

    Beach Wedding--Semi-Formal or Casual

    • For a wedding on the beach that has a semi-formal or even a casual feel, the mother of the bride should be looking for an outfit that will keep her cool throughout the entire ceremony. A lightweight skirt with a nice blouse would be great, or even a maxi dress would be a good option. A new pair of flip-flops that have a small amount of bling on them could be a good choice for footwear, or, if you would rather, a casual pair of sandals could work well also. For jewelry and accessories, go light. Too much jewelry will make the outfit look more dressy, which is probably not what you are going for. As far as hair goes, try something that will look nice as it gets tossed by the ocean breeze.

    Out-of-Town Wedding

    • Some destination weddings will just be out of town or out of the state but still held in a church or similar venue. In this case, the mother of bride needs to consider how well her outfit will travel. The attire should fit with the elegance level of the bridal party--formal, semi-formal or more casual. When picking an outfit to pack, pay attention to the tag of the outfits you are looking at. Most of the time dry-clean only outfits do not travel well and will need to be ironed or steamed once you reach your destination. Also be aware of the jewelry you are choosing, which needs to be strong enough to handle travel; a delicate chain could get knotted beyond repair during a trip.

    Cruise Ship Weddings

    • Weddings on a cruise are becoming more and more popular. This destination could easily be very formal or completely casual. But the mother of the bride will know well in advance what level of dress is expected. As with out-of-town weddings, the luggage restrictions on a cruise can be strict. Keep in mind the regulations of the specific cruise when you are looking for the perfect outfit. Do not forget that shoes take up luggage space.

    Tips for all Destination Weddings

    • No matter where the wedding will actually take place, there are some basic rules the mother of the bride should always consider. Do not ever wear a completely white or completely black outfit to the wedding ceremony and reception. White takes away from the bride, and black makes everyone think you are in mourning over the whole union. Also try to stay away from a color that matches the bridesmaids' dresses, especially in formal and semi-formal weddings. Otherwise, just find a dress that you are comfortable in and feel great about.
