Money Tree Etiquette
The wedding money tree is a traditional custom of many cultures. Tree branches or other tree depictions are used for placing money as a gift to the bride and groom. There are many who are questioning the etiquette of how a money tree should be displayed and explained, so that guests unaware of this custom will understand its meaning. It is especially in poor taste to mention the money tree on the invitation, as this implies the request of a gift from your guests. In fact, the wedding invitation should have no mention of gifts, whatsoever. It is a tricky subject, indeed.

Inquiries
-
Notify all bridal party members that if a guest asks what to give the bride and groom, that they should say that monetary gifts are appreciated. The money tree can be displayed at the wedding reception.
Cultural Themes
-
A money tree is an acceptable part of a wedding if it is a cultural themed wedding, in which it is a tradition of that culture. For example, a wedding themed around the Philippines could have a money tree in the décor.
-
Allowances
-
If the wedding is small and the bride and/or groom are from a culture in which the money tree is used, it would be acceptable to display a money tree. This is even if there is no décor relating to that culture.
Money Envelopes
-
If would be uncomfortable for wedding guests to display cash on the money tree. Providing small envelopes near the money tree is good etiquette. More guests are likely to use the money tree if they feel comfortable doing so.
Encouragement
-
To encourage your wedding guest to contribute via the money tree, and still be in good taste, clip a couple of folded bills onto the money tree, as display. This makes it easy for those unfamiliar with this wedding custom to understand its meaning.
