Horseshoe Rules

Horseshoes is a relaxing yard game. Requiring strength and precision, horseshoes is great for a backyard BBQ or just enjoying any pleasant day. The game is simple to learn but may take a long time to master.

  1. Set Up

    • Two sand-filled pits are set up approximately 40 feet from one another. The middle of the pit features a long stake anchored into the ground.

    Players

    • If you are playing teams, one player from each team of two stands on the opposite end of the horseshoe pit. This makes it easier then walking from pit to pit. During a two-player game, players walk from pit to pit to retrieve the horseshoes.

    Tossing

    • The first player tosses two horseshoes towards the pit. The second player does the same. The turns are reversed on the next turn. Players usually play to 15 or 21 points.

    Points

    • A ringer is achieved when the horseshoe lands directly around the stake. The two ends of the horseshoe must stick out far enough that a line can be drawn and the stake does not touch it. The horseshoe closest to the stake achieves a point if no ringers are made. If a player has both horseshoes closer than an opponents, two points are awarded. A ringer is worth three points.

    Canceling Points

    • A player's points can be cancelled by another player. For example, if a player scores a ringer, another player can top that ringer and cancel it out, allowing no points for any player. If two ringers are scored, the other player must match with two ringers in order to cancel them both out.
