Endocrinology is the field of medicine concerned with the system of the body that produces hormones, chemicals that promote a variety of bodily functions. A variety of professionals work in the field of endocrinology.

  1. Physicians

    • Medical physicians called endocrinologists treat patients suffering from diseases and disorders relating to the endocrine system, such as diabetes, thyroid disease, growth disorders and polycystic ovary syndrome.

    Nurses

    • Endocrine nurses educate and provide care for patients under the care of endocrinologists. They teach patients how to care for themselves and work with their doctors to execute treatment plans while patients are hospitalized.

    Veterinarians

    • Endocrine veterinarians are specialized providers of healthcare for animals that focus upon the diagnosis and treatment of animal hormonal diseases and disorders.

    Research

    • Endocrine research scientists are often registered nurses, physicians or biochemists that investigate new methods of treatment and prevention for endocrine-related diseases. Endocrine researchers work for universities, government agencies, pharmaceutical companies and private research firms.

    Public Health

    • Public health officials sometimes specialize in educating members of the public about issues surrounding endocrine diseases and conditions.
