Careers in Radio Broadcasting

Radio broadcasting involves the transmission of radio signals to electronic devices inside of homes, vehicles and businesses to provide news, music, entertainment, information, weather and sports to listeners. There are a variety of jobs in the radio broadcasting industry.

  1. Production

    • Producers and assistant producers make decisions concerning how a radio show will sound and what content it will feature, while program directors oversee the programming for an entire radio station. Disc jockeys and announcers provide commentary, conduct interviews and talk to listeners.

    News

    • News directors are responsible for selecting what news stories a radio station will cover as well as overseeing the news staff, while reporters gather the information for the selected stories. News anchors, weathercasters and sportcasters provide current events and forecasts to listeners.

    Technical

    • Technical directors oversee the technicians that operate radio station control rooms, while control engineers ensure smooth transitions between programming, music and commercials. Radio operators and audio technicians operate microphones and ensure that the radio waves produce the correct signal strength and clarity.

    Sales

    • Advertising sales agents are responsible for selling commercial airtime to businesses, while sales managers supervise the agents and ensure that the sales team meets sales goals. Continuity directors schedule commercials and assist with their production.

    Management

    • Station managers oversee all elements of the radio station's activities, ensuring that the station complies with FCC guidelines and operates according to budget.
