Why Is Salicylic Acid Harmful During Pregnancy?

Acne can be a problem for all women, but pregnant women face the task of finding a treatment that is safe for their fetus. Traditional creams and over the counter treatments may not be safe while pregnant. Salicylic acid, commonly found in acne treatment creams and medication, is not safe for unborn children and should not be used while pregnant.

  1. What is Salicylic Acid?

    • Salicylic acid is a member of aspirin family, helping reduce redness and inflammation of skin caused by acne. Salicylic acid can also be found in facial peels, as it can remove top layer of skin. This is a common ingredient found in store bought acne treatment applications. As an acne treatment, it can be taken in both oral and topical form.

    Safety and Pregnancy

    • Salicylic acid is absorbed into the bloodstream, and travels to fetus. According to Babycenter.com, topical and oral use of salicylic acid are associated with birth defects.

    Solution

    • Pregnancy can change a woman's skin and cause acne breakouts. Knowing that it can occur can help you be prepared to deal with it until birth. If treatment is absolutely necessary, try natural treatments or those who do not penetrate skin.

    Natural Remedies

    • Regular baking soda can be used as a skin exfoliant and a face wash. Oatmeal and water can be mixed into a paste, to create a face mask that cleanses pores.

    Skin care and bloodstream

    • Leslie Baumann, a professor of dermatology at the University of Miami and author of "The Skin Type Solution," says that some topical ingredients that get absorbed into the bloodstream should be avoided. One of those ingredients is salicylic acid, according to Baumann.

    How is it labeled?

    • Products with the following labels and ingredients should be avoided: Salicylic acid, Beta hydroxy acid and BHA. Alpha hydroxy acids, sometimes listed as AHAs, glycolic acid, or lactic acid, are safe.
