What Is Super Video CD?

While DVDs offer high quality pictures and sound, CDs can also provide video content and be played within DVD players. In order to achieve high quality CD videos, you should use a super video CD, or SVCD for short.

  1. Function

    • A super video CD acts like a DVD, but uses a standard CD to store the media. Thus, full-length movies, music videos and other video content can be stored on an SVCD.

    Software

    • An advanced burning software program should be used to burn an SVCD. One of the better programs for this is Nero because of all of its features and options (see Resources). Check your own burning software for an SVCD or video CD option.

    Benefits

    • Using an SVCD instead of a blank DVD can save a lot of money on blank media. It can also store the same media in less space, saving the blank DVDs for bigger videos or data.

    Size

    • A super video CD holds the same amount of data as a standard CD, around 700 MB of space. Because it increases the video quality, only around 45 minutes of a movie can fit on an SVCD.

    Considerations

    • A super video CD may not be compatible with all DVD players. Create a test SVCD in order to try it out before burning multiple copies.
