Who Invented the Modern Seatbelt?

Every day, millions of people get into their cars, put on their seatbelts and go on their way feeling safe and secure without giving a thought to the wonderful invention that keeps them safe.

    • The invention of the modern three-point seatbelt is attributed to Nils Bohlin, a Swedish inventor.

    Bohlin's Background

    • Bohlin started his career working as an aircraft designer for Saab, where he helped develop ejection seats.

    Significance

    • Patented in 1958, the three-point seatbelt was the first to provide restraint across the lap and shoulders with only one latch.

    First Cars

    • Bohlin was working for Swedish auto manufacturer Volvo at the time, making them the first to offer the modern seatbelt to car owners in 1959.

    Recognition

    • Bohlin was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1999 for his lasting contribution to the auto industry. He died in 2002.

    Effects

    • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that seatbelts have saved nearly 150,000 lives between 1975 and 2001.
