Raccoon Rabies Symptoms

Rabies is an "acute viral disease of the nervous system in warm-blooded animals," according to the Raccoon Tracks website. Rabies can kill both animals and humans. Raccoons are common carriers of this disease, which has several visible symptoms.

  1. Change of Behavior

    • A raccoon with rabies may lose its natural fear of humans. It may also venture out in the daytime, which would be unusual for this nocturnal creature.

    Aggression

    • A rabies-infected raccoon may become aggressive, attacking other animals, people and even inanimate objects.

    Disorientation and Paralysis

    • A raccoon with rabies may seem to wander aimlessly and appear disoriented. It may also have one or more paralyzed limbs.

    Facial Symptoms

    • The eyes and nose of the raccoon may be caked with mucous. The lower jaw may also show signs of paralysis.

    Salivation

    • The raccoon may display increased salivation and foaming at the mouth. It may also appear to be "choking" on a foreign object," according to Raccoonworld.com.
