The Life Cycle of Killer Bees

The Africanized Honey Bee, also known as the killer bee, was actually the result of an experiment gone bad in 1957. The entire life cycle of killer bees is only a little over two months.

  1. Egg

    • The queen bee lays the egg inside of the nest. The killer bee's egg stage last approximately three days.

    Larva

    • After three days, the egg turns into a larva that will molt four times before the next stage of the life cycle. The larva exists for five days if the bee is a queen or worker bee, and seven days if it's a drone, or male bee.

    Pupa

    • One molt occurs during this stage, which lasts 13 days.

    Adult

    • After approximately 21 days, the killer bees will emerge fully formed: two eyes, a body and wings.

    Death

    • Killer bees live for about 50 days.
