Paper Trimmer Safety

Paper trimmers come in sizes big and small, and make measuring and cutting paper much simpler. A paper trimmer has measurements and lines on it to help you cut the paper to the right size, while ensuring the cut is straight. They also save time. With a paper trimmer, you can cut an entire piece of paper at once, compared to a pair of scissors which take several minutes to cut large paper. Paper trimmers are sharp, so be careful with them.

  1. Safety Latch

    • Make sure the paper trimmer has a safety latch. The latch should attach to the handle when the blade is not in use to prevent it from being lifted.

    Blade Guard

    • Purchase a blade guard if your paper trimmer does not have one. This covers the blade and protects you and others from accidents. Always use the blade guard when the paper trimmer is not in use.

    Location

    • Place the paper trimmer in a secure location where small children cannot reach it. Make sure it cannot be pulled or knocked off a table, and that children cannot climb up to it.

    Tension Spring

    • Check that your paper trimmer has a tension spring. The tension spring holds the blade so it does not fall instantly when you let it go. Without one, many more accidents can occur.

    Storage

    • Store a paper trimmer when it will not be used for a long period of time. Put it inside a box or bag and store it in a dry location to prevent children from playing with it.
