Airport Rules for Luggage

Whenever a person takes a flight on a passenger airplane nowadays, there are so many rules about what one can and cannot bring on a plane in one's luggage that it can be daunting.

  1. Who Regulates Luggage?

    • The entity that oversees and enforces luggage regulations is the Transportation Security Administration.

    Not Permitted in Carry-on Luggage

    • The TSA prohibits the following items to be carried on board a plane: sharp objects, guns and other weapons, tools, explosives, flammable items, disabling chemicals and gel-based candles and shoe inserts.

    Liquid Items in Carry-on Luggage

    • The TSA requires a strict method of transporting gels and liquids. They must be in containers of 3 ounces or less, and they all must be kept in a 1 quart or less transparent freezer bag.

    Not Permitted in Checked Luggage

    • The only items the TSA currently does not permit in checked luggage are explosive items, gun powder and caps, and chemical, flammable and incendiary items.

    Permitted in Checked Luggage

    • TSA regulations permit most of the items excluded from carry-on luggage, such as sports equipment, sharp objects and other items, provided that they are wrapped in protective coverings.
