Signs of Chronic Depression

Chronic depression may also be referred to as major depression or clinical depression. Chronic depression occurs when an individual has sad feelings and a disinterest in life daily for an extended period of time. Chronic depression may also cause behavioral changes and physical problems.

  1. Sad Thoughts

    • Individuals with chronic depression typically feel sad and they may even feel worthlessness at times. Some may even have suicidal thoughts.

    Isolation

    • Individuals with chronic depression may isolate themselves from other people and not find happiness is activities which they once enjoyed. They may have no interest in sex.

    Behavioral Symptoms

    • Chronic depression may lead to extreme irritability, restlessness and concentration difficulties. People may also have trouble making everyday decisions and have frequent episodes of crying.

    Physical Signs

    • Chronic depression can either lead to weight gain or weight loss. Individuals with chronic depression may experience unexplained body pains and they may have trouble sleeping.

    Diagnosis and Treatment

    • A physician may diagnose chronic depression after ruling out other medical conditions. To be diagnosed with chronic depression, an individual must experience the major symptoms of chronic depression daily for at least two weeks. Chronic depression may be treated with a combination of therapy and prescription medications.
