Attention Defict Hyperactive Disorder

Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood neurological disorder that can continue into adulthood. It used to be called attention deficit disorder but was renamed ADHD in 1994. People with ADHD have a difficult time focusing, paying attention and sitting still.

    Symptoms

  1. The symptoms of ADHD include daydreaming, appearing to not listen when being spoken to, a short attention span, fidgeting, being talkative, not sitting still and being impulsive.
  2. Causes

  3. It is still not entirely known what causes ADHD, though scientists believe genes play a large role. Other studies also suggest that smoking or alcohol use during pregnancy, food additives and brain injuries are also linked to ADHD.
  4. Diagnosis

  5. ADHD is diagnosed by a health care professional through asking questions about the patient. Signs of ADHD often begin appearing between the ages of three and six.
  6. Treatment

  7. ADHD can be treated with prescribed medications such as Ritalin or Adderall and through psychotherapy.
  8. Coexisitng Conditions

  9. Conditions that can coexist with ADHD include learning disabilities, oppositional defiance disorder, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and Tourette syndrome.
