Songs Used for Funerals
Based upon the area in which the person lived and the heredity of the person, it is easy to choose songs that are appropriate to play for a funeral. Songs that appeal to a wider audience work best. When in doubt, soft music that does not have high-pitched notes and is instrumental is always welcome.
-
Celebrate Life and Love
-
Songs that talk about the life cycle can be moving, but not always acceptable. Instead choose a life topic such as how much life was enjoyed. Song suggestion: "The Dance."
Child's Funeral
-
Use songs that have no words and lullabies.
-
Style
-
When choosing a song, take into consideration the musical style choice of the deceased. If the person was from another country, there may also be national or traditional songs from which to choose.
Christian
-
For a Christian funeral, choose music that celebrates the coming together of the Lord and the believer. Song suggestion: "Blessed Assurance" (classic hymn, in a medium tempo).
Warning
-
Do not use songs that have inappropriate language, refer to the human body as a sexual object, or that have an active upbeat tempo, such as disco.
Location
-
Many areas have traditional music played for funerals that reflects the majority of the community: always include a few of these type. For example, a New Orleans funeral would have jazz.
