About Canakkale, Turkey
Canakkale is a province in northwestern Turkey that straddles the Dardanelles, a narrow body of water between Europe and Asia. Visitors use the city of Canakkale as a base to explore the surrounding area, famous for a historical WWI battle and the legendary city of ancient Troy.

In April of 1915, British, Australian and New Zealand troops attempted to seize the nearby Gallipoli peninsula in an effort to ultimately claim Constantinople, the then-capital of the Turkish Empire. Their efforts were unsuccessful and resulted in the loss of over 100,000 Allied and Turkish soldiers.
