History

The Iberians occupied the area first. The Romans then moved in and built a fortification called Gerunda. Girona was under the Holy Roman Empire until the 12th century was a Jewish community thrived there. The Jews were driven out by Catholic Kings, in the 17th and 18th centuries it was seized by the French. Napoleon conquered the region in 1809. The walls surrounding the city were destroyed in the 19th century. Today, many of the remains and ruins add to its appeal.

Girona enjoys a familiar Mediterranean climate. Its winters can be wet, but snow is rare. The summers are dry and pleasant thanks to Mediterranean Sea breezes.

Religious celebrations and tradition are a big part of Gerona. On January 5 the Parade of the Three Kings takes place and during the Catholic Easter Season Holy Week celebrations are abundant. In April, Giroma celebrates Gastronomic Week which is a festive culinary fair. Other events are celebrated throughout the year.
