Does My Baby Sleep Too Much?

During their first year if life, infants typically have irregular sleep patterns. This is especially true during the first two months. Here we describe the typical sleep patterns of babies through their first birthday.

    Birth through 3 Months

  1. Newborns up to 1 week of age will typically sleep for 14 to 18 hours a day. By 1 month of age, they are often sleeping 12 to 16 hours a day. Infants at this age are only capable of sleeping between 2 and 4 hours at a time.
  2. 3 to 6 Months

  3. Between 3 and 6 months of age, infants often sleep between 12 and 15 hours a day and have stopped most, if not all, of their nighttime feedings.
  4. 6 to 9 Months

  5. Between 6 and 9 months of age, infants typically sleep between 11-1/2 and 15 hours a day. They are capable of sleeping through the night with two daytime naps.
  6. 9 to 12 months

  7. Between 9 and 12 months of age, infants usually sleep between 11 and 14 hours a night with two daytime naps of one to two hours each.
  8. Considerations

  9. All infants are different and may not follow sleep patterns in accordance to these guidelines. If you have any concerns about your baby's sleep patterns, you should consult with your pediatrician.
