Purpose of Garters

A garter is a clothing device made to hold up stockings or socks. Garters are narrow strips of ribbon or fabric that attach to the woman's stockings at one end and her undergarments or a garter belt at the other end.

Garters are made of stretchy fabric or ribbon-like material. Some may be made of elastic. At each end of the garter there are clips to keep the garter attached to a woman's stockings or undergarments. Some include decoration like ribbons, lace or bows.

History

Garters were first popular in the 18th century. In the 20th century, they became popular again due to their comfort.

Function

Garters are used to hold up stockings. Nowadays people wear them as an alternative to pantyhose or to add sex appeal to an outfit. A garter can also be an elastic band covered in fabric that goes around the leg.

Weddings

The removal of the garter is a traditional wedding event. The bride wears a garter under her gown and the groom removes the garter and tosses it to the male guests.

Proms

At some American high schools, it is popular for girls to wear garters to their proms. At the end of the night, their date removes it and keeps it as a souvenir.
