Common Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis, often referred to simply as MS, is an auto-immune disease that causes the immune system to attack the central nervous system. The common symptoms of multiple sclerosis usually start to present in a person's late teens or early 20s. MS symptoms can be divided into several main categories.

  1. Visual Symptoms

    • Common visual symptoms of multiple sclerosis often include blurry or double vision, involuntary eye movements, color blindness, difficulty focusing vision, seeing flashes, reduced pupil response and loss of vision.

    Motor Symptoms

    • Motor symptoms of MS can include muscle weakness, diminishing muscle mass, partial or total paralysis, muscle spasms, jerking limbs, seizures and other involuntary movements, stuttering or slurred speech, reduced coordination, difficulty swallowing, difficulty balancing, difficulty walking, inability to maintain rhythm and slouching posture.

    Sensory Symptoms

    • Common sensory symptoms of multiple sclerosis frequently include numbness or tingling in the extremities, inability to feel, impaired sense of taste or smell, abnormal sensations of being hot or cold, pain or itching without apparent cause, buzzing sounds and sensations of electrical shock.

    Bowel and Genital Symptoms

    • MS symptoms that generally manifest in the bowels and reproductive organs include excessive urination and bowel movements or the inability to urinate or defecate, loss of sexual desire, erectile dysfunction and inability to achieve orgasm.

    Mood and Cognitive Symptoms

    • Common mood-related and cognitive symptoms of multiple sclerosis include depression, anxiety, mood swings, memory loss, chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances and the inability to form or understand words (aphasia and dysphasia).
