Fire Safety Rules for Kids
Being prepared for fire emergencies is essential for all family members, including children. By practicing and teaching children how to handle the dangers of fire, children will feel more confident and safe.
-
Do Not Play with Matches
-
Explain to children under no circumstances should matches or lighters ever be played with. Tell kids to turn over found items to adults. If other children are playing with these items, notify an adult immediately.
Stop. Drop. Roll.
-
Teach children what to do if they are caught on fire. Stop what they are doing. Drop to the ground. Roll to extinguish the fire.
-
Smoke
-
If smoke is in the area, instruct children not to open doors. Drop to the ground and slowly check to see if the door is hot.
911 Etiquette
-
Show children how to relay information over the phone to a 911 dispatcher properly. Practice sessions on how to answer questions and giving their name and address.
Home appliances and more
-
Explain to children that stoves, microwaves and other appliances can cause fires. Never stick anything in an outlet. Never place items over a hot light bulb.
Emergency Plan
-
If a fire occurs, explain to children the emergency plan. Always have a designated place to meet outside, away from the home.
